Early nineteenth century Swansea, before the coming of gas. At night, before the establishment of a regular police force in the town, the dimly-lit streets were patrolled by seven elderly watchmen, an ideal target for violent pranksters. Who exactly were these ‘Mohawks’ and why were they seemingly above the law? As members of the ‘Dolly Club’, their appetite for drink and other vices, and their shameless desire to intimidate and insult the citizens of Swansea with their bizarre behaviour, sharply divided opinion in the town.
